Joachim Bondo’s Deep Green chess program is a part of portable computing history. Bondo approached the Iconfactory to help him take Deep Green’s graphics into the era of iPhone HD Retina and iPad displays.

The direction was a lush, yet clear graphic style, with an emphasis on the real-world textures traditionally used in chess sets. Individual chess pieces were refined for optimum recognition, coupled with the tactile charm made possible by larger screens and resolutions.

The back of the game board contains a steampunk-style animated clockwork mechanism, and this imagery was carried through to the application’s logo treatment. The classic Deep Green app icon was updated with a new treatment that kept the well-known “knight” silhouette for easy brand recognition, yet used color and texture to imbue it with freshness and modernity.
