Vellum helps users create eBooks for
iBooks,
Kindle and
Nook. 180g needed a Mac app icon for Vellum that showed elegance and simplicity while also focusing on text and writing. They came to us with a concept already in mind to use an
origami paper flower with snippets of famous literature hinted at on the folded petals. It was a challenge to determine the most appealing display angle but after making some physical models with paper and viewing them as it would sit in the dock on Mac OS X, we decided the straight-on front view would be most appealing. From there we kept the main body of the flower subdued and off-white to show its physical book relationships while making the center bright
magenta to add character and interest. The shading was also kept minimal but maintained effectiveness in presenting a dimensional shape while also staying inline with what you expect to see in a Mac app icon.
